new twd friends

I attended an event last night in New York at the Ace Hotel. It was sponsored by one of our favorite wedding blogs, 100 Layer Cake and it featured the amazing musical talents of Elan Artists (check them out, they have some of the best musical groups in the industry)!

At the event, I met two beautiful and talented women with very cool wedding related businesses and I wanted to introduce them to you!

Sarah Pease is the founder of Brilliant Event Planning .  Sarah plans weddings and events, but her niche is planning proposals!  So if your man is a die hard romantic, but can't come up with the perfect proposal on his own, or if he is just completely clueless, Sarah is your gal!   Be sure to check out the proposal page of her site, where she has a proposal idea generator!  After answering a few questions about your future fiance, she will recommend the ideal proposal scenario for you!

Sarah Jenks is the creator of The Breathtaking Bride.   Sarah is a nutritional coach for brides to be, focusing on a holistic plan to weight loss!  We constantly hear that our brides plan to lose weight before their wedding.  Sarah can truly make it happen, and in a completely healthy way.

The best part is that both of these lovelies are brides to be themselves!  So, they can appreciate what you are going through! Stay tuned to the blushing blog for interviews with both of these talented women in our ask the experts series.

ask the experts~ an interview with our head seamstress

As part our Ask The Experts series, we have interviewed our head seamtress, Penny Barone.  We hope that this post will enlighten our brides as to the amount of work and talent that goes into altering their gown.  Bridal Alterations is a truely a lost art form!

How did you get started working with wedding gowns?

I started sewing Barbie doll clothes at age 9. My first job working on wedding gowns was at a bridal store in Hartford 35 years ago, which is where I got hooked on bridal. The following year a wedding gown factory opened in Enfield, Connecticut and I became their first seamstress. I later worked directly with the designer as his sample maker. The factory closed after only 2 years and I unhappily joined the insurance industry.

During the insurance years I would make or alter the wedding dresses of friends and family, and performed part-time alterations at various bridal shops in Connecticut. I eventually left the insurance industry and devoted all of my time to dressmaking and alterations. I estimate that I have worked on somewhere between 4500 and 5000 bride, mother, bridesmaid or flower girl dresses in the past 35 years. I love what I do and am blessed to be doing it here at The White Dress by the shore.

What goes into altering a wedding gown?

Our gowns are from the top couture designers in the industry. As a result, they are extremely well constructed. Each gown has multiple layers and when altering them, each layer has to be taken in exactly the same amount to ensure a proper fit. We appreciate the delicate silks and laces and the special handling required to alter each gown. We always take the time to do the job properly. There are No shortcuts- EVER. Shortcuts create lumps and bumps that no bride wants.

At The White Dress by the shore, we spend an extraordinary amount of time with the bride and her gown. Generally, we have 4 fittings for each gown. We concentrate on making the bodice fit at the first fitting because the bodice affects the skirt length. The hem and bustle are the focus at the second fitting. At the third fitting we check the overall fit of the gown and ensure that the hem is perfect. At the final fitting the brides puts the dress on one more time to check for perfection, the wrinkles are removed and the dress is packaged and placed in her car. We devote one hour to each fitting and two hours for the final pickup, just in case any minor tweaks need to make while the bride waits.

Although the bride may see the seamstress for 3 to 4 hours in fittings, the dress also spends many hours in the sewing room getting carefully taken apart and stitched for the next fitting. Our goal is to ensure that the dress feels as great as it looks.

Hemming even a simple design can take several hours due to the number of layers in the gown. Each layer of the skirt needs to be measured, stitched, checked, trimmed and pressed separately.

Lace hems take much longer because the lace usually needs to be removed and re-attached after hemming the shell and petticoats of the gown.

What is the most difficult aspect of altering a wedding gown?

The wedding dress has evolved over the last 60 years from a single layer of satin worn over a bra and separate petticoat into elaborately constructed multi-layered works of art. Gowns today often are designed with the petticoat built-in, and often with a bra or fully boned corset built-in.

Each layer needs to be altered in the same exact manner or the overall result will be less than perfect.

A common question is how do you alter a gown with a lace hem?

It depends on the type of lace and the style of the dress. Sometimes we need to remove the lace, shorten the fabric portion and then reapply the lace along the new hemline. Sometimes we need to carefully cut along a design in the lace pattern, reposition the lace, sew it, and then cut away the excess. If there is a horizontal waistline seam, we sometimes shorten from the top of the skirt. The waist seam is taken apart and then we cut away the unnecessary inches from the top of the skirt panels and then put the bodice and the skirt back together. Either way is very time-consuming and can be tricky, but it's our specialty is making any changes to the dress imperceptible.

How do you feel about customizing gowns from their original design?

We love to customize dresses at the White Dress by the shore. It is what makes the dress truly unique for each bride. We can do just about anything imaginable. If the bride wants a slimmer skirt, a dip in the neckline, a "V" in the back, shoulder straps, a sleeve added or taken away, or a little bling added here and there, we can do it all!

One thing we love to do is place a personal memento into the dress. It can be a piece of fabric from their mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress, a strand of yarn from her grandfather’s favorite afghan, or a piece of tattered handkerchief sewn to the lining near the hem. We once added a tiny pocket inside the gown for a special coin or medal. A Dad once hand embroidered the couple's names and wedding date onto a piece of silk and I stitched it into the lining. That was truly sweet.

What are the biggest misconceptions about your job?

1. That we have a magic wand in the back room.

2. That if the right size was ordered they wouldn't have needed alterations.

3. That we can do a hem without the proper shoe.

What words of wisdom can you provide brides going through the alterations process?

If you plan on losing weight and have a specific regimen that you are using, tell your seamstress at the first fitting. It is important to formalize a plan for the weight loss so that the gown does not have to be taken in at every fitting.

Proper undergarments are KEY! It is important to come to the first fitting with the foundations that you plan to wear under your gown. The appropriate foundation makes all of the difference in the fit of your gown. We love that we share our space with Beneath the Gown so that Josie can outfit all of our brides in the perfect undergarments for their gown.

It is critical that you have the finalized shoe by the second fitting. We need the EXACT shoe at the fitting in order to ensure that the hem is perfect.

What do you love about the process?

I just love working with brides. They are women who are happy and in love, at one of the best times in their lives. The most gratifying part is that one moment during a fitting when the bride sees herself in the mirror and realizes that, yes, it really is HER wedding gown and she feels fabulous in it. All those months of wondering how it would turn out are over and bridal worry and silly nightmares were unnecessary. They get that glow, do a little twirl or let out a little squeal or a couple of laughing tears and say they don't want to take the dress off. It gets my heart every time.

ask the expert ~ Modern Trousseau designer, Callie Tein

We are thrilled to be hosting a trunk show with Connecticut based designer Modern Trousseau this weekend (December 9th -11th).  Modern Trousseau is a company that specializes in couture bridal and mother of the occasion dresses.  The collection was first launched at The White Dress by the shore 5 years ago and it is now sold all over the world!

Callie's lastest collection will be here for the trunk show.  Don't miss your opportunity to try her new designs hot off of the runway!  Join us for an appointment on Friday and Saturday and have the opportunity to meet the designer and work with her to customize the gown of your dreams!

Further to our 'ask the expert series', I interviewed Modern Trousseau founder and designer, Callie Tein about her collection, trends in bridal and her inspiration.  Here are her responses:

How did you get started in designing bridal?

I've loved fashion ever since I was a little girl growing up in Melbourne, Australia. I used to dress up in my Mum's evening clothes from the sixties and seventies.  I sometimes remember important or special events in my life through the clothes that I was wearing at the time, and I remember my first pair of high heels, my first ballgown (my prom dress) and of course my wedding gown.

I studied Fashion Design at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.  I loved every minute of it.  When I graduated, I worked as a designer for many different Australian companies, designing woman's wear, children's wear, and eventually wedding gowns.

Once you have designed weddings gowns, there is no going back.  It is the ultimate in creativity and design.  The luxury of working with fine French laces, imported silks and delicate bead work makes me feel very lucky. I want every dress to be perfect, and every every bride that I dress to feel special on her wedding day.

What was the inspiration behind your current bridal collection?

50's couture~ classic with a twist.  I was inspired by the fabrics that we found, particularly the beautiful laces. I wanted to add texture to the collection, so we did gowns like Wallis and Martini. In In this collection I wanted to add new dimension to take it to the next level.

What are the current trends in bridal?

The trend at the moment is being able to customize your gown and make it your own. Accessorizing the gown as way of customizing it is a strong trend with brides- whether it is with a special belt or jewels. The Vintage look is also still en vogue. In particular, we are still very inspired by lace.  Color as a trend is also going to be strong. Bold black and white is a big trend.

"Ebony"

People always ask if strapless will stay in fashion. What is your opinion?

YES!!!!! Strapless is a beautiful look on a young girl- it always looks fresh. Strapless represents freedom. When you compare what people wore years ago to now, women were covered up for their weddings. Historically, weddings were often planned by their mothers and women wore long sleeves and high necks.  Today, strapless represents freedom for young brides- and it is not going away.

"Kendra"
You are one of the few bridal designers who designs bridal and mothers dresses. What differentiates your mother of the occasion collection?

We have a very specific look for our mothers. We want the collection to be young, fresh and elegant. We are designing for a more mature woman, so I am always thinking about a mature figure and the designs cater to her. But, I still strive to keep the looks fresh, young and flattering!  We have banished frumpy!

amazing destinations!

I love to travel, and this year have had the amazing opportunity to visit some incredible locations. I wanted to share some of my favorite spots that would be perfect for a destination wedding, honeymoon or even anniversary trip!

This weekend I had the pleasure of celebrating my daughter's 10th birthday and my 13 year wedding anniversary at the Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire.  The hotel itself is absolutely stunning, as are the surroundings.  They have one of the most beautiful spas I have ever been to!  It would be an incredible place for a destination wedding ANY season!  There is so much to do for the guests and your wedding pictures would be outrageous!

Mount Washington Hotel in the winter

My father has a house in an adorable town in Florida called Seaside that we visited over the 4th of July this year.  Seaside is a southern version of Martha's Vineyard.   In the center of the town is the Seaside Inn.  It is a charming hotel that sits on a breathtaking white sand beach.  It would make an incredible location for a destination beach side wedding!

Last, but certainly farthest from least, I had the opportunity to visit Costa Rica this spring for a photo shoot.  We stayed in a villa that was part of Los Suenos Resort.  The resort boasts a world class hotel, with an incredible, pool, golf course and beach.  Or, if you want to take your visit to the next level, you can rent an gorgeous private villa either for your accomodations or as a venue for your wedding- or better yet, both!.  The talents at Stay in Cost Rica are always available to coordinate all of the details of your stay!

The cover and images from the book were shot here at The White Dress by the shore and owner Beth Chapman contributed to the chapter on selecting your wedding gown.  Here is a sneak peak at a few of the top tips:

1.  "Secure your wedding date and venue before you select a dress."
2.  "Set a budget that includes the extras, like foundation garments, alterations and accessories."
3.  "In selecting your wedding attire reflect your personal styles, not the trends."
4.  "Skip the entourage- bring only a couple of people who are close to you to limit opinions."

winter shoot- behind the scenes!

As you know, we've been doing a lot of creative and editorial shoots, some of which were featured in BRIDES magazine and Style Me Pretty recently. Over the past 5 months we've had the opportunity to work with talented and incredible people. Since we can’t show you the images from our super top secret projects, we wanted to show you some behind-the-scenes images and talk about what we’ve been working on.
This past December we had the opportunity to shoot at an amazing location in the northern hills of Connecticut, The Mayflower Inn and Spa. The setting really inspired so many details of our shoot. In every story we’ve set out to create, the vendors come together and collaborate on almost each aspect. It is truly a team effort – We are happy to say – with each mind bringing unique and amazing ideas to the table. We have to admit not only are we SO lucky to work with these folks but we have THE BEST time doing it!! On this recent winter inspired shoot, we collaborated with Carla Ten Eyck, Tony of Datura, Dana Bartone, Corine Dell’Orso of Lovely Lollies , Candice Dowling Coppola of Jubilee Events and the ladies behind Posh Paperie from San Diego.

After several weeks of planning, our day always starts out with the arrival and load-in of our vendors. Our models arrive for hair and makeup, done by the talented stylists at Dana Bartone. For this shoot, Miss Catie Bane waved her magic wand and created a stunning look for our 'bride-to-be'!

Meanwhile, Tony and Candice are creating details for the shoot with the help of Candice's staff. On this shoot they create three tablescapes and a confections table. There were a lot of beautiful pieces for the table and they created several different looks at each tablescape. The details from the ladies at Posh Paperie looked amazing — from the escort cards, place cards, banner, pinwheels and pennant flags. We also styled up some incredible sweets created by Corine Dell’Orso of Lovely Lollies. Setting up all these details and tablescapes takes us several hours… there is never any down time!

The floral designer for our shoot was Tony of Datura – A Modern Garden. Tony is truly an artist and created almost all of our floral details on site. He is such a great person to collaborate with. He designed several unique bouquets for our shoot using all different types of textures. He also created all the centerpieces and floral looks on the tables! We used a lot of birch, some metal, and a variety of gorgeous flowers. We set out with a concept for our shoot and have definite ideas in place– but often create a lot of things on the spot that we didn’t intend or think of. Tony might be the best person we know at doing that! He is so talented and creative.

A quote from our friend Candice Dowling about us:
"Beth Chapman and Kelley Solomon of The White Dress by the Shore always style the models. Beth brings a truck load of fashions and accessories and is constantly adjusting a necklace, bolero or fixing a wayward strand of hair. She also gets stuck holding all the accessories in the bitter cold!! Our shoots wouldn’t be anything with out these two–that’s for sure. They are fully responsible for making our models look incredible!!! I love to sit back and watch Carla shoot Beth looks– Beth, Kelley and Candice always get giddy at how gorgeous everything is!! "

Once a shot is set up that’s where Carla Ten Eyck comes in. Seriously– without this talented woman, these shoots wouldn’t even be possible, and we wouldn’t have ANY fun. Once we get a shot ready Carla jumps in to shoot, direct, and make things happen. She’s the best at what she does! She also keeps us all laughing, excited, on our toes, and enjoying the hard work we’re putting into each project. She has some of the best ideas and is so fun to collaborate with.

In the end, we all work together on many details and are apart of each shot being set up. You can see us all pitching in to achieve the final outcome… which is always incredible!!
We hope to have more behind the scenes from some previous shoots we’ve done and most definitely our next shoot in New Orleans !!

XOXO, TWD

Catering Advice

Following is the second in our ask the expert series. Friend of The White Dress by the shore, the amazing talented Linda Sample of A Thyme to Cook answers commonly asked questions and provides her expert advice below.

Asian “Fish and Chips” Black and White Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi Tuna with Lotus Root Chips, Wakami Coleslaw and Hoisin Wasabi Drizzle

Tips for selecting your caterer ~

1. First—the obvious---they should be licensed, with the highest level of liability insurance, have a stable, highly trained staff who are on permanent payroll (and not ‘under the table’), have experience in a variety of venues and scenarios (especially the site being considered), and can provide references.

2. You want someone who is first and foremost PERCEPTIVE---who gets your vision and can translate it into reality- perhaps with a twist. The caterer you select should reflect YOUR PERSONALITY and understand your priorities and not just what they do on a regular basis. You want someone who GETS WHO YOU ARE and carries out those concepts- whether it is incorporating the lace pattern of your wedding gown on to your cake or having the main focus of the wedding be on food with a multi-course meal. You also want a caterer who has a knowledge base of logistics of the wedding site and flow. They should make appropriate suggestions regarding what works and what doesn’t, given the particulars of the venue, guest count, season, etc.

3. You also want someone you can trust and who also values cost-effectiveness. There is so much waste and “fluff’ in the wedding industry and you want someone who will steer you in the right direction along those lines.

Current Trend in Catering~

1. First and foremost—use of seasonal, local, indigenous ingredients with certification of origin.

--Everyone wants local, fresh, foods and they want to know the source. At A Thyme to Cook, we design our menus individually, based on the bounty of our local farms, and revise them constantly—nothing is prepared ahead, pre made or frozen. We always cook on site and our great pastry chef, Bill, bakes all our breads from scratch.

2. A creative twist (but not intimidating) on a familiar comfortable food----perhaps a rum and coke in ‘gel’ form---the same flavor but totally different presentation.

“Rum & Coke” White Rum Gelee with Coke Granita Accented with Lime Zest

3. Seated meals still seem most popular . A seated meal presented as 1 course on 1 large plate (perhaps a cool rectangle, step plate) is not only cost-effective but expedient in service.

4. Focus on non-alcoholic beverages that are different---everyone has been loving our peach-mango-passion fruit ‘Fizz”---it can also be transformed into a signature alcoholic beverage with the addition of rum or vodka .

5. An element of surprise---whether it is a late- night passed “Liquor Lollipop” ( for which we received an International CATIE Award) or tiny gelato cones, or s’mores—or a surprise hot dog grill at midnight following the most formal of weddings—everyone loves an unexpected twist

Some Creative Ideas~

1. Instead of greeting guests with a refreshing beverage (especially when they may arrive at a ceremony site in the hot sun) ---we make all kinds of refreshing Frozen Pops----rose-scented water ice pops (so romantic and aromatic but subtle) , a cucumber lemon pop---even garden salad pops—cuts down on water bottles ( which are not so green)!!!

Popsicles: Coconut Wasabi, Lime Lavender, Mango Lemon Verbena

2. Flavor combinations of savory with sweet in unexpected ways-—wasabi and dark chocolate, jalapeno and lime sorbet, black pepper and berries, coconut and curry—in hors d’oeuvres, entrees and beverages

3. Interesting natural vessels for foods---wood planks, edible shells, and cones----having ‘no-waste’ foods that have no sticks or picks.

Citrus Infused Raspberry, Kiwi and Cantaloupe “Pearls” on a Poppy seed Edible Spoon

4. An assortment of wonderful sweets are VERY popular and we like to put new twists on retro desserts-------we butler-pass tiny red velvet whoopie pies, the most adorable crispy peanut butter n jelly cookies, tiny blueberry shortcake shots, tiny snow cones

5. Creative wedding cakes that reflect the couple—maybe a long geometric shape with entwined initials for a couple who are architects, or recreating nautical rope knots as a border---and of course, cupcakes. The concept of the wedding cake is that there is one unit that all can partake in—so we often do gigantic pies, or strawberry shortcakes

Favorite Venues~

-There are so many wonderful and unique venues here in Southern New England-- Jonathan Edwards Winery in N Stonington, Harkness Mansion in Waterford, Saltwater Farm in Stonington, Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Branford House in Groton, Mystic Art Center, Elihu Island in Stonington, the gorgeous Stone Acres in Stonington, Ct River Museum in Essex, Wadsworth Mansion in Middletown, The Webb Barn in Wethersfield, Tyrone Farm in Pomfret—each has its’ own distinct beauty and personality!
